I/W/W/B - Maeve Hydock
The internet was created in the late 1960s and is known to be one of the most revolutionary creations of all time. This is because we still use the internet today and will continue to use it throughout our entire lifetime. It was not just one single person who created the internet. It was a large group of scientists, different programmers, along with engineers. Each individual had different ideas that they then all put together to create what we call the Internet. Even though it was not created until the 1960s it was talked about long before then.
The internet was created back then for government and military purposes. This was because the internet was launched during the rise of the Cold War. Which is why it was used for government purposes. The government and scientists used the internet at the time to share research with one another. However, it was used on very big computers that were not transportable. Today the internet is used for so many different things. People from all around the world can communicate with one another no matter where they are. Yes, the government and scientists still use the Internet today but now there are thousands of ways it is used by every single person.
ARPANET which was founded in 1968. It stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. This was to create a decentralized communication network that could resist a nuclear attack. Over time, the internet evolved as I stated above and it is now used to connect millions, transforming the way people communicate, conduct business, and share information. The term, Packet Switching, was founded in the late 1960s and is still used as the foundation of data today.
The World Wide Web also known as WWW or just the Web was released on April 30, 1993. Tim Berners-Lee was the one who released the source code for the very first web browser. Tim was a British computer scientist. The World Wide Web is a system of interconnected documents linked by URLs and hyperlinks. It was created as a user-friendly server to find and access information, content, and services. It was originally used for only academic research but has now expanded as a tool that your everyday person uses on a daily for many different things.
The Internet and the World Wide Web are related to each other, but they are not the same thing. Therefore, they work together but the World Wide Web is not the Internet. To start the Internet provides an infrastructure and the World Wide Web leverages this infrastructure to enable users to access and interact with information. Overall, the web is one of the many services that operate over the internet.
The first website to ever be created was created by Tim Berners-Lee. He is also the man who created the World Wide Web. He was working at Cern when he created the first website in 1991. Cern is a European Organization for Nuclear Research. The website was created to provide information about the World Wide Web. The first website is still accessible to the public. The URL to the website is, http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html
Hedy Lamarr was a famous Austrian American actress. She was born in 1914 and was not only an actress but also an inventor. She had a successful acting career between the 1930s and 1940s in Hollywood. However, that was not all she did throughout her lifetime. During WW2 she made many contributions to wireless communication technologies. Which would be known as Bluetooth and wifi today. Hedy and George co-invented a frequency-hopping system that was designed to prevent radio-controlled torpedoes from being interrupted by enemies. This work created the foundation for technology like wifi and Bluetooth because they both utilize frequency hopping techniques just like she created during WW2. There is also a song titled "Hedy Lamarr" written by the band Moonbase, the song talks about her intelligence and attributions to society rather than just her Hollywood fame.
A group of engineers at Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications company, created what is known as Bluetooth. Bluetooth was introduced in 1994. Bluetooth got its name from a Danish King who united Denmark and parts of Norway in the tenth century. His name was Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson. The initials of King Harald in Nordic runes are what the Bluetooth logo is combined with. They did this because it creates a unique look for the logo which is what makes it known.
Wireless Fidelity or what is known as Wifi, was developed/created by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE. The development of wifi began in the late 1990s, however, the first version of wifi did not come out until 1999. The first version was called 802.11b. Therefore, the original name of what is now known as wifi was IEEE 802.11. The term "Wifi" came to be because the branding consulting firm Interbrand found it to be catchy. It also suggested high-quality communication.
